Without experience, you will need educational credentials. It depends on what type of admin assistant you desire to be. Something like a small office, an associates would break you through but don't expect to be paid much... ever.

At the higher corporate level will require a bachelors degree. Nothing specific, but they tend to favor business majors as it's more relevant to the position and usually most of them were marketing majors.

There's also medical office/hospital admin assistants. In these cases you should take a program focusing on this, as it would include medical terminology courses that are important for employment.
References :
Many community colleges offer associates degrees for administrative assistants, and they're not very popular programs - very people go into college wanting to be a secretary - but there are a lot of people out there looking for competent secretaries.
References :
No you cannot do it from home. Anything that you see on the internet that says you can is a scam. Admin Assistant is a fancy way of saying secretary. You don't even need classes for this but sometimes a Bachelors is preferred. You can get a receptionist position that pays $10 an hour almost anywhere. Start off with that and work your way up. You generally need knowledge in computers (especially excel) and data entry.
