How do I get an office job without the actual employment experience?

I have the computer knowledge to work as an Administrative Assistant, but not the experience in an office job.How can I get my foot in the door without it?

Start checking out employment agencies. They can put you in a temp to perm position and if there is something the employer is looking for that you don’t have, the employment agency more than likely has free training. It’s a great way for someone to get the experience they need! Good luck!

With a college degree, will taking an administrative assistant position be damaging to my career?

At 22, I have graduated and am about to take on a position as an administrative assistant with a company with great room for advancement. In my current organization, I’ve noticed that all the people with this title are those without degrees. However, entry-level (ish) opportunities are hard to come by in the field of marketing/PR (my field) and I feel like an administrative role is all I’m going to get for right now until I build more experience. If I spent a year or two doing this, would this look bad to potential employers down the road?

If you decide to venture down this path, choose an administrative position in your field. Employers see unrelated job experience as indecisiveness and lack of confidence, so choosing a position in a totally unrelated field COULD hurt you.

Being an Administrative Assistant is a good way to catapult into a field if you choose carefully. Try to work in this capacity for a company that can eventually hire you for the job you desire to have, since internal candidates often get preferential consideration for jobs.

Take this time to network with other employees (in HR and the department you covet, especially) and get to know the inner workings of the company. Build as much experience and knowledge as you can as well so that you can become more of an asset to the organization.

Marketing Careers

Professionals in the field of marketing are the eyes and the ears of a company. They are the link between consumer and product. Job titles in the field of marketing include Market Researcher, Survey Researcher, Advertising/Marketing Consultant, Marketing Coordinator, Marketing Assistant, Marketing Manager and Promotions Planner. These titles all have a multitude of varying tasks and responsibilities but all have one goal in mind, to learn as much as possible about the consumer in order to serve them better and increase the sale of the companies product or service.

Knowledge is key in the field of marketing. Most private sector marketing careers have a minimum requirement of a master’s degree and this stipulation includes both employment and advancement. Entry-level positions are often filled by graduates with a bachelor’s degree in marketing or some related field. These positions are frequently non-marketing related. Careers as a research assistant, administrative or management trainee, marketing interviewer all the way to sales person are often slotted for bachelor’s degree holding candidates while executive and middle management positions are held for those with strong computer and quantitative skills, experience and an advanced degree.

Professionals in the field of marketing typically earn advanced degrees in business administration, marketing, statistics or communications. A liberal arts education can also be seen as useful. Courses like economics, psychology, English and sociology can enhance quantitative skills and courses in mathematics, sampling theory, survey design and computer science can aid in the science of data collection, which is critical in this field.

The area of annual rate of pay is where the discrepancy between having experience and an advanced degree and not having these things becomes more apparent. The median annual earnings of a market research analyst in 2002 were $53,810, while the median earnings of a survey researcher in 2002 were $22,200. For market research analysts the middle 50 percent earned between $38,760 and $76,310 while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $29,390 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $100,160. As for survey researchers, the middle 50 percent earned between $17,250 and $38,530, while the lowest 10 percent earned less than $15,140 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $57.080. Once the math is all finished there is only one poignant way of stating the obvious- in the marketing field is pays to continue your education.

Due to a competitive economy and the need for market research and strategy by a variety of different companies and industries, employment in the field of marketing is expected to grow between 21 and 35 percent, which is above average, through 2012. Career opportunities will be more plentiful and less competitive for candidates with advanced degrees. Those with bachelor’s degrees will have to scramble for the limited number of available entry-level positions. However, a candidate with a bachelor’s degree and strong computer and quantitative skills may be able to gain employment at private firms.

What is a good employment agency to use?

I am a recent college graduate in Atlanta. I have a degree in English, and I am looking for an administrative assistant job in the Atlanta area. I have had experience as a part-time administrative assistant in college. Has anyone had any positive experiences with a certain agency?

I am using Acsys Inc but not sure if they are located where you are.

Other good agencies are Manpower, Kelly Services, Randstad, Hudson Legal (I used them once they paid very well), K-Force, Adecco, Friends and Company. Just to name a few. Good Luck

I would like to change careers.after 10 years of being an administrative assistant. Any tips?

I have over 10 yrs of administrative experience supporting senior level executives but see no signs of moving up in my career, I have been trying to become an executive assistant to a VP or a CEO but no luck so far. I have a master’s degree in English and very good at multitasking, coordination and very detail oriented. How can I use my education and experience to move up in my career OR use these skills in any other suitable job? I have even tried to apply for entry-level office manager positions but to no avail. I am really frustrated and depressed. I know I deserve to be in a much higher position but don’t know why I have not been successful in getting it.

I too have over 23 years experience in administration, and like yourself am getting nowhere. I’ve tried applying for receptionist, office manager, data entry and assistant to the administrator, but to no avail. There are so many others out there applying for the same position that it’s very frustrating when you know you are qualified for the job, even if it means stepping down a bit just for a change. I wish I could answer your question with some great insight, sorry. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your search. I just wish they would just come out and tell you what your doing wrong or whatever the real reason is that you didn’t get the position, so we could change or strengthen our weakness’.
Good Luck!!

Innovative Medical Careers: Physician Assistants

In the United States, a PA, or a Physician’s Assistant, is a non-physician therapist, who is licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. In many cases, this supervision does not have to be direct and many Physician’s Assistants practice in distant and remote locations like satellite clinics.

Physician Assistants prescribe medicine and treat patients and in some places in the United States, they are given a DEA number that gives them the power to prescribe specific controlled medicines, such as narcotics. In surgical procedures, Physician Assistants act as first assists during a surgery. They also offer medical services, which are compensated by a third party insurance company or by Medicare.

How They Fare

In the year 2005, PA’s held around 64,000 jobs. The number of jobs available is greater in proportion with the number of practicing Physician Assistants, since some PA’s hold more than two jobs. For instance, many Physician Assistants work under a supervising physician and they also work in other clinics, hospitals or practice independently. According to the AAPA or the American Academy of Physician Assistants, in January 2006, there were almost 60,000 certified Physician Assistants practicing in clinics.

In 2005, over 50% of Physician Assistants were found to work in clinics and offices of physicians, either in osteopathic or allopathic practice. Almost 40% were hired by hospitals and the remaining few were engaged in nursing homes, prisons, The United States Department of Veterans Affairs, public health clinics, schools and home health care agencies. In addition, the AAPA states that almost 20% of all the Physician Assistants were found to provide health care to many rural communities.

Accredited Programs

In 2006, almost 150 accredited Physician Assistants Programs exist. One governing body, the ARC-PA or the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, accredits all these programs. Most of these programs are Master’s Degree programs, however, a few of them do provide undergraduate majors and graduate level training.

One governing body, the NCCPA or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, grants the certification of a Physician Assistant.

Other Innovative Medical Careers

Physician Assistants and the Nurse Practitioners provide similar services. The only dissimilarity would be that Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses and have to undergo extensive training, more than the PA’s, and they have to obtain a Master’s Degree in nursing. They are also known as APC’s or Advanced Practice Clinicians or MLP’s or Mid-Level Practitioners.

Medical Assistants perform routine clerical and clinical tasks at any physician’s clinic. A Medical Assistant is a multifaceted healthcare practitioner, who is capable of performing a variety of laboratory and clinical procedures, along with certain administrative responsibilities. They are multi-skilled and versatile professionals. Their formal education takes place in community colleges, junior colleges, vocational or technical institutes or proprietary schools. The curriculum has to be accredited, if graduates plan on getting registered or certified. Accreditation requires that the school curriculum should offer classroom lectures and well equipped laboratories.

Today, many of the health care placements focus on healthcare services and almost 15% of all healthcare jobs available have increased. The factors that contribute towards the growth of jobs in this industry include the growing and aging population that demands additional medical services and of course the use of innovative medical technology for treatment and intensive diagnosis.

How can I get a administrative assistant job if I dont have expierence?

I really need a job that will point me in production/publishing positions. and ive noticed alot of them are administrative assistant jobs. Ive never done anything like that. so how can i get a job like that when i dont have expierence? i need the expierence first but no one will hire me. should i go to a employment agency or a job fair?
Thats what Im looking for to get enough expierence where it leads to production/printing assistant or assistant to art director. i have a B.F.A. to get them but they all want expierence

You can try applying at smaller offices where the task list of an Admin. Asst. isn’t too demanding. That’ll help you start to get your feet wet.
